GOTHENBERG trained at Middleham in Yorkshire, by Mark Johnston, spread-eagled the field to record a runaway six lengths success under Jason Weaver in the featured Group Three Lexus Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh on Saturday.
The Polish Patriot colt, who finished fourth in the European Free Handicap at Newmarket two weeks ago, broke smartly and soon asserted his authority over the home trained opposition.
"He really appreciated a decent, cut in the ground and we may consider supplementing him for the Irish 2,000 Guineas along with Bijou D'Inde," said the winning trainer's wife, Deirdre.
Aidan O'Brien, who elected to go to the Curragh as opposed to Sandown Park to supervise Life Of A Lord's Whitbread Gold Cup challenge, was rewarded with a 76 to 1 double, highlighted by the victory of Proud Titania in the Athasi Stakes after Check The Band and Christy Roche initiated the brace in the opener.
Partnered by Seamus Heffernan, Proud Titania, a daughter of Fairy King, edged clear over a furlong out and held the persistent challenge of the favourite Zafzala by a diminishing head.
O'Brien's delight was tinged somewhat with the news that stable companion Magarah, who was pulled up by Roche at the halfway stage, had suffered a broken pelvis.
Last year's Budweiser Irish Derby runner-up Definite Article opened his seasonal account on his re-appearance in the Mooresbridge Stakes with a snug three quarters of a length success under Mick Kinane, who went on to complete a short priced double on Dancing Fred.
At Listowel yesterday, Charles O'Brien, who sent out his first winner of the season at the Curragh on Saturday, quickly got another when Desert Mountain won the Shannon Car Ferry Maiden. Christy Roche brought the well-backed 2 to 1 chance home three and a half lengths clear of uneasy favourite, Cento.
Roche looked set to get a second winner when he kicked Aidan O'Brien's Kaldan Khan into a clear lead before the straight in the John J Galvin race. But the field closed in quickly and Roche could only finish third behind 8 to 1 winner, Roi Croft, trained by Vivien Kennedy.
Aidan O'Brien was earlier on the mark when he won the Feale Maiden Hurdle with newcomer, Brook Hill Lady. The Charlie Swan-ridden 16 to 1 chance was left clear when her closest challenger, Rock'n Roll Kid, blundered and unseated David Casey at the final hurdle.
There was another big priced winner in the Triton Showers Handicap Hurdle, which was won by the Danny O'Brien trained Raheen Flower at odds of 25 to 1.
