Brazil 4 Egypt 3:EGYPT LODGED a protest with Confederations Cup organisers after their defeat by Brazil, claiming Brazil's late penalty winner was awarded illegally on the basis of video evidence
Egypt coach Hassan Shehata told a news conference his team were not contesting English referee Howard Webb’s decision to award Brazil a penalty when substitute Ahmed Al Muhamadi stopped a shot on his goal line with his arm.
But Shehata said Webb and his linesman had both signalled a corner and only changed the decision after being told by the fourth official of the handball.
“As far as I am aware there is no rule allowing video evidence,” Shehata said. “We’re not contesting the referee’s decision but the way it was made. Or maybe the rules have changed and nobody has told us.”
Underdogs Egypt had shaken the five-time world champions, but finally succumbed when Kaka converted the resultant penalty in time added on.
African champions Egypt had fought back from two goals down to level at 3-3, scoring twice in a minute early in the second half, and pressed forward in search of a winner which would have shaken world football.
The Brazilian defence were clearly rattled but in the end their dignity was saved by the late penalty.
In the opening match in group B Brazil struck early, Kaka scoring in the fifth minute as he steered a difficult bouncing ball through the defence with three deft touches before stroking home past goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.
