Dunwoody makes history

RICHARD DUNWOODY made history at Southwell yesterday

RICHARD DUNWOODY made history at Southwell yesterday. The Ulsterman's success on Jervaulx gave him 100 winners for the campaign for the eighth season in a row.

He broke Peter Scudamore's record for successive centuries by a jump jockey, set up in the seven seasons from 1986/87 until his retirement in 1992/93.

Dunwoody first reached three figures in 1989/90 and has repeated the feat every season since.

He equals Scudamore's record of eight career centuries, the multiple former champion who also reached the landmark when he tied with John Francome for the title in 1981/82. Francome is the only other jump jockey to run the pair close, having become a centurion five times from 1980/81 to 1984/85.

Dunwoody said: "A lucky day. At first I walked away from a crashing fall from Crown Equerry and then I got the 100 it's great to get the record.

I would like to take the opportunity of thanking everybody who has supported me Gordon Richards, David Gandolfo and my three old bosses (Martin Pipe, David Nicholson and Nicky Henderson), as well as all the other trainers.

"My next target is 1,500 winners, but I need to keep going for another season to achieve that. I have no plans to take a break until after Galway and I need to keep fit until then".

. Reams of Verse, sixth behind stablemate Steepytime in the 1,000 Guineas, was promoted to Oaks favouritism after Henry Cecil all but ruled out two other members of his team yesterday. The filly was cut to 8 to 1 from 12 to 1 by William Hill following the withdrawal of both Fascinating Rhythm and Fiji from the big race betting.

Cecil plans to aim Reams of Verse and Yashmak, who both ran in the Newmarket Classic, at Epsom while Sleepytime will stick to races over a mile.
