THE ability to kick at the end of a race is a priceless asset and Lenny Doyle employed it well to get the better of his Raheny club mate, Z Byrne, to win the Clonliffe two mile road race down the Finglas Road. Raheny made a clean sweep of the top places with Owen Brady taking third.

Doyle and Byrne quickly made their way to front and not even the climb up by Glasnevin cemetery could separate the two protagonists. The outcome was in doubt until the final turn when Doyle unleashed the sprint which took him to a five second victory in a time of nine minutes and five seconds.

The outcome of the women's race was never in doubt with Catherine Smith, fully recovered from her exertions in the London Marathon, the winner ahead of Rose Ferguson.
