FRANKIE DETTORI guided the John Gosden-trained Shantou to his second Italian Group One win in the one mile, four furlongs Gran Premio di Milano at San Siro yesterday.
The popular jockey won the opening Premio San Cristoforo on Dancer Mitral and completed a treble on Luca Cumani's Barba Papa in the mile and a quarter Premio Tony Bin.
The St Leger winner Shanto, although doing Clive Brittain's Luso no favours by failing to keep a straight course, put up a good performance on his seasonal debut. Setting off the 2 to 1 on favourite, he ran on well for a length and quarter win on a track officially described as good.
Luso, last year's second, nevertheless gave Gary Stevens a good ride as the American limbered up for Royal Ascot. John Dunlop's Taipan (Pat Eddery) ran an eyecatching race in finishing third a further half length back.
