A DISCIPLINED defensive performance was the key to Shamrock Rovers' first away win of the season at Turner's Cross on Saturday. Rovers had to withstand strong Cork pressure early on before ending Cork's unbeaten run.

Sean Francis got the winner for the Dublin side four minutes into the second half, turning in Pat Fenlon's headed pass from six yards after Cork had failed to clear a corner.

Cork's left winger Ollie Cahill was a constant threat in the first half but forwards Damien O'Connell and John Caulfield failed to put his good work to effect. The forthright defence of Paul Whelan, Gino Brazil and Leonard Curtis took the sting out of the home team's attack in the second half and Rovers ran out deserved winners in the end.
