St Columba's College reached the semi-finals of Section A of the Leinster Schools' Senior Cup following a dramatic victory over an unfortunate Moyne Community School at King's Hospital yesterday.
Prop Sean Scott's thrust to the line, followed by Patrick Cooper's conversion, was the last action of the game, leaving Moyne's players broken-hearted.
St Columba's may have deserved the win, given their more adventurous approach, but for long periods they came out second best to the Moyne forwards.
Openside flanker Cooper dived over for St Columba's other try in the fifth minute, and converted, before a Moyne onslaught revolving around the varied kicking game of outhalf Stephen Coy.
He scored with penalties in the 10th and 15th minutes to leave the minimum between the sides until Cooper was accurate with a 35th-minute penalty, giving St Columba's a 10-6 lead at the break.
Cooper made it 13-6 four minutes into the second half, before Moyne knuckled down to force the winners into retreat.
Coy landed penalties in the 59th, 66th and 69th minutes to edge his side towards the finishing line.
Then came Scott's late intervention.
