RTE Sports presenter Des Cahill enjoyed very mixed golfing fortunes last week. He entered the fourball during the Open Week at his home club, Woodbrook, with broadcasting colleague Pat Kenny. Things were going so badly that Kenny had left the course by the time the group reached the short 17th where Cahill holed out with an eight iron for his first ever ace. At least the opposition were still there to see it. They included former Sligo Rovers and Shelbourne soccer player Mark Gill who is very useful off 17 and ended up in second place.
The following day Cahill played in the Dublin GAA Classic at Druids Glen on a team that included former inter-county player Vinnie Holden. There was no early quitting this time as they put together the best score of the day, but Cahill erred in marking the card and they were denied first prize. A treble treble for Manchester United would scarcely be more disappointing for the spiritual leader of the ABUs.
