The death has occurred in Luton of Tom "Bud" Ahearne who was on the Republic of Ireland team which shocked England 2-0 in a soccer international at Goodison Park in 1949.

Ahearne won 15 caps with Ireland, the first in 1946 against Portugal. After time with Limerick, he moved to Belfast Celtic and collected four caps with the Irish Football Association in Northern Ireland.

He had a very successful career with Luton and went into business after his playing career ended.
