LIAM BOTHAM, son of former England Test cricketer Ian, has turned his back on professional cricket with Hampshire by signing a three year contract with West Hartlepool, who need a lift to their English League fortunes.
He signed the contract at West Hartlepool yesterday in the presence of Mark Ring, the club's director of rugby, who expressed his delight at Botham's decision to opt for rugby.
"It is virtually impossible to combine summer and winter sports at a professional level these days," said the former Wales back.
"Liam has had a taste of cricket at a professional level and now has the challenge ahead of professional rugby at a national level. I think he has a great future."
Botham, 19, was pleased that the decision had been taken and now wants to concentrate his time on rugby, especially the fitness level that the top flight game requires.
"I have enjoyed both cricket and rugby since my school days as Rossall, and perhaps everyone assumed I'd concentrate on cricket. While it wasn't an easy decision to make - I'll always remember my first class debut and the fivewicket haul against Middlesex - I've always had a slight preference for rugby," said Botham.
"I've discussed the position with not only my father - who has never pushed me to follow either route and has expressed his support whatever I decided - but also with professional advisers?"
