Henry Candy sends Bestemor on the long journey from Wantage to Hamilton Park today and the hint should be taken. The Kingston Warren trainer is certainly not a regular at the Scottish track but the Captain J C Stewart Memorial Handicap offers his four-year-old filly a great chance of making a belated visit to the winner's circle.
Bestemor has been knocking at the door of late with two good seconds to her credit. She was beaten a neck by Mouche in a Leicester handicap earlier this month, leading two furlongs out and keeping on well but just caught on the line. And last time at Bath Bestemor was desperately unlucky.
She made headway two furlongs out but was denied a clear run. Once switched she fairly flew but the post arrived just too soon and she went down by half a length to Polonaise Prince. Both those efforts were off a mark of 50 and Bestemor races off just 3lb higher today.
Only lightly raced, Bestemor is open to further improvement and she warrants the nap selection to enjoy a welcome change of luck in this trappy heat.
When the ground rides soft at Hamilton it pays to go with high numbers in sprints and with that in mind Double Power has sound claims from stall 15 of 18 in the Sunday Mail Rockavon Handicap.
Lee Lloyd-James's three-year-old filly wears blinkers for the first time today after disappointing over six furlongs last time having previously won and finished second (on soft going) over five.
With the combination of draw, headgear and a drop back to the minimum trip everything looks right for Double Power to register her second career win.
