BALLYMENA'S recently appointed coach, Nelie Smith, would certainly not be preferring his credentials as a miracle worker, But the manner in which the Eaton Park club's fortunes have soared since he took over suggest that he certainly has the Midas touch.

Saturday's performance against Old Belvedere was a case in point. Ballymena played with total commitment.

Ricky Mcllmoyle gave them an early tonic with two penalties. Old Belvedere, though, had no intention of succumbing. Billy Tracey reduced the deficit when he hoisted over a penalty, but a third accurate kick from McIlmoyle restored Ballymena's advantage.

Ballymena took a firm grip on the game in the second half and when Derek McAleese kicked the home team's fourth penalty in the 60th minute, it was no more than they deserved.
