Madam, – Prof Richard Dawkins at the World Atheist Convention described the Catholic church as “an evil institution by far the worst where the churches are concerned” (Home News, June 6th).

Did nobody tell the professor that this is the institution in Ireland (and throughout the world) which provides hospitals, schools and care for the poor, the blind, the deaf, the homeless, etc? What a contrast to the institutions of death provided by famous atheists such as Hitler, Stalin, Ceausescu and others? – Yours, etc,

Madam,    –    Michael Nugent is certainly right in stating that “atheists are arrogant” – how could anyone greater than them exist?  They are also condescending and bitter – Prof Richard Dawkins hoped that “the churches would wither away” and described the Catholic Church as “an evil institution ... by far the worst where the churches are concerned” (Home News, June 6th). Perhaps because it stands for something? It is interesting that the Dublin Declaration on Secularism and the Place of Religion in Public Life says that “the only reference in the Constitution to religion should be an affirmation that the State is secular”.

In other words, the new religion is to be secularism?  It would be interesting if the next world Atheist Convention were to be held in, say, Saudi Arabia. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Patsy McGarry reports that Senator Ivana Bacik, warned at the World Atheist Convention of “a creeping fundamentalism in Irish life” (Home News, June 4th). How right she is and how well she knows. She and her fellow speaker Richard Dawkins are leading the charge, or should I say creep. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Your correspondent, Róisín Ingle, has often made her views on religion known. In her recent article (Weekend Review, June 4th) she tells of a young lady, who because she did not wish to upset her mother, attended Mass on Good Friday. It is the only day in the year that there is none. – Yours, etc,
