Madam, - I am not a golfer, but have followed with interest the debate concerning Portmarnock golf club and its membership policy.

It seems to me that at the heart of the matter are simple principles of freedom of choice and the right to associate as one wishes. The club was founded many years ago by a number of men, with membership limited to men. It is a private club, and as such surely has the right to regulate its own affairs.

If its conduct is found by some to be objectionable, then there are sanctions which can be imposed - for example refusal of any State monetary assistance. However, it is an abuse of democratic principles to seek to force an alteration of membership policy.

Take an analogy - a few men with an interest in motorcycling style themselves as a club, and meet each Friday night in the garage of one's house; each pays an annual subscription of €10 which is expended on lighting and heating.

Would any reasonable person agree that the full rigours of the law (whatever they are) should be applied to force them to allow a female join them, against their wishes?

The difference in scale of operation between both clubs might be immense, but the principle applies equally. - Yours, etc., -
