A chara, – Paddy Malony says “Moral authority still rests with our Government on this matter” (September 6th).
I find it difficult to see how there can be moral authority in the absence of truth. Enda Kenny made serious allegations against the Vatican in his Dáil speech; he did not give evidence for his claims.
The Vatican has rejected his allegations; its response provides substantial evidence to support its position. Surely the moral thing is for Mr Kenny to bring clarity to this debate by either withdrawing or substantiating his remarks? – Yours, etc,
Sir, – The response from the Vatican is clearly a response from a state, rather than from a Christian church.
If the Vatican wishes to be treated as a state, we should do so. This should include treating its various branches in the country as state enterprises, which should follow all normal rules of conduct and taxation.
If the Vatican wishes to be treated like a church, a religion based on the life and teachings of Christ, it should act the part, showing compassion and remorse.
In short, it should act as if it did really represent Christ.
A compassionate church we need. A problematical diplomatic relationship with a small city state we don’t need and can do without. – Yours, etc,
