Sir, – Fr Frank McGauran (May 17th) asks “How is it possible to separate allegiance to Christ from obedience to the teaching authority of the church which he founded?”

The teaching authority of the Catholic Church is not always compatible with the teachings of Christ. An obvious example is the nonsense “authoritative” teaching about limbo which caused untold and needless anguish to mothers and fathers about the fate of their unbaptised children. That authoritative (sic) teaching has only been changed very recently.

There are other examples where the church acquires selective amnesia in relation to its “authoritative” teaching in past years. – Yours, etc,
