Sir, – I am 76 years of age and a retired parish priest with 50 years of active ministry under my belt. I am prompted to put pen to paper because of what I am hearing from so called “enlightened” Catholics.

May I ask this simple, key question: how is it possible to separate allegiance to Christ from obedience to the teaching authority of the church which he founded? I am a most ordinary man with no pretensions I hope. Indeed a favourite prayer of mine is from a Patrick Kavanagh adaptation – “I must be nothing, nothing that God may make me something”.

Finally, I cannot wait for a credible answer to the question I have posed. – Yours, etc,
