Vaccinating younger people

Sir, – The Government has been congratulating itself on the unexpectedly high uptake of the Covid vaccine among the 18 to 24 age group and now the 16to 17 age group. However, these young people are not queueing to get the vaccine in order to keep our Government and health officials happy. They want their lives to get back to some semblance of normality. They want to resume their drastically interrupted social lives. They want colleges and schools to return to normality. They want to experience live music and festivals again. Cancelling the Electric Picnic festival may seem like the least risky option just now but shows a lack of ambition and may have unforeseen consequences in terms of reducing the motivation of young people to get the vaccine. – Yours, etc,

MARY CANNON,

Howth, Dublin 13.
