ULSTER ELECTION

Sir, - On this side of the water objecting to an election does not look well, very democratic. Don't be wrong footed by a chump like Johnny Major - wrong foot him instead. Elections in Northern Ireland? Certainly. In Ulster? Why not? Give the British government a hand and organise them simultaneously in Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan on the same basis.

A reasonable idea I should think the bi governmental approach would be "locked in" to the resulting assembly and there would be no fear either of such an assembly becoming another Stormont.

I suggest this idea, though, mainly for the better enlightenment of my own fellow compatriots. Undoubtedly the so called Ulster Unionists will object to an all Ulster election and this I am sure will come as a great shock to the English. Ulster says "No" to an Ulster election? How can this possibly be? Hopefully then my fellow compatriots will begin to perceive what a gerrymandered, contrived statelet we've been supporting in the north east of Ireland all these years; and that democratic elections are not only about how votes are counted but also who can vote.

If such an election were also to show that Ulster actually says "Yes" to Irish unity rather than "No" - then I think we English would be thunderstruck. Who knows we might even learn to say - slan abhaile Mr Trimble. - Yours, etc.,
