Sir, - On Thursday night I travelled by train from Tara Street, Dublin to Laytown, Co Meath. We were without heat all of the way and had no light for part of the way. We arrived over 30 minutes late at our destination to a station in pitch darkness.

When the lighting was restored on the train I read Seamus Martin's Letter from Russia ("Surviving in the new bad times") in which he writes: "The White Sea Express destined for the far northern port of Archangel pulled out - as almost all Russian trains do - precisely on time."
