Time to give good priests a break

Madam, – I am a young Irish Catholic and I am proud of my Catholic faith

Madam, – I am a young Irish Catholic and I am proud of my Catholic faith. Hard to believe, maybe, in a culture where the media takes such a biased view against the Catholic Church and subjects it to a constant barrage of derogatory reports, as if it were some kind of evil.

Yes, sadly, evil deeds have been done in the name of the Catholic Church, but in all ages and in all aspects of society, evil is commonplace, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone” (John 8:7).

The Catholic Church in its humanity is no less prone to evil than other churches or other sectors of society. Some 90 per cent of child abuse in Ireland takes place within a family setting. Why is the media not doing a more thorough investigation into the bigger picture of child abuse in Ireland instead of focusing on a limited number of victims/perpetrators? Show some semblance of truth and charity in your reporting. Only a small minority of priests have failed in their duties to the Gospel and Catholic Church. Give our good priests a break!

At Easter, this time of hope, let us honour and focus on those priests for the great sacrifices they make out of love of the Lord and his people. Remembering the numerous demands of their calling and the great services they provide to us, they surely deserve our respect and gratitude. Please stop disrespecting the Catholic Church and my Catholic faith. – Yours, etc,
