The trials of Oscar Wilde

Sir, – As Frank McNally says (An Irishman's Diary, February 6th), we can never be sure as to whether Edward Carson rolled his Rs or not. However, what we can say for certain is that he never "prosecuted" Oscar Wilde. He defended the Marquess of Queensbury in Wilde's ill-judged libel action. Based on Carson's cross-examination of Wilde at this trial, Wilde was subsequently prosecuted for gross indecency in a second trial in which Carson was not involved. – Yours, etc,

PAUL G SHEVLIN,

Belfast.
