Sir, - We saw, with interest, the winning entry for the Liffey pedestrian bridge competition in yesterday's publication. So similar is its form to its neighbour, that it appears, given the chance, the bridge would transform itself into the existing Ha'penny Bridge.
We now wish that we had entered our proposal, that depicts an exact replica of the Ha'penny Bridge. This gives a landmark made up of "twin bridges" in a manner similar to the twin towers found in many cities. A coupling of this nature would generate a monument greater than the sum of its parts. On a calm day the reflection in the waters of the Liffey would double this number to four bridges.
The choice of the winning bridge over some of the more individual schemes entered highlights the jury's possible leaning to the repetition of the Ha'penny as being the ideal solution; perhaps we would have won after all. - Yours, etc., Kevin Driver,
