The government's popularity

Sir, - Health services stretched to breaking point. Homelessness at an all-time high

Sir, - Health services stretched to breaking point. Homelessness at an all-time high. Public transport grossly underdeveloped, underfunded and under-maintained. Public housing ditto (with huge price inflation the result).Waste management and and recycling - what management? Childcare - who cares?

Those are just a few quick thoughts on this Government's failure to govern; there are many, many others. Could it be much worse if we were in the depths of recession? The present Government is sitting on the largest ever financial surplus and depending upon two disgraced TDs to hang on to power. It is therefore beyond belief that the Irish Times/MRBI poll in your edition of January 26th shows that a majority would choose to keep everything this way for a further five years! Have the Celtic Tiger cubs somehow proliferated to a majority level, or have we all been spin-doctored into submission? - Yours, etc.,

Dr John McLachlan, Helen Haughey, Belgrave Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
