Sir, – Mark Mulqueen (October 16th) defends TDs’ allowances, but why are TDs reimbursed for travelling to work? Some 1,700,000 workers in this country pay every day to get to work and many travel up to two or three hours each way, incurring thousands of euro annually.

Very few of these are on €90,000 plus a year for 24 weeks’ work.

It’s high time that particular gravy train was mothballed. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The TDs and their overgenerous allowances are a classic case of quis custodiet ipsos custodes. – Yours, etc,
