Madam, – I read with disbelief Dr Liam Healy’s letter (April 8th). Dr Healy does not state his qualifications, so one has no clue as to the extent of his knowledge in the area of fertility. He does, however, demonstrate a clear lack of knowledge in this field as it is widely recognised across the civilised world that acupuncture has been proven to greatly improve both male and female fertility.
Most fertility clinics now advocate acupuncture, as research has demonstrated it greatly improves the success rate of IVF and other interventions. Some fertility clinics employ acupuncturists to improve the success rate.
I would be happy to furnish references to research in the area of fertility.
Is Dr Healy aware that the World Health Organisation recommends acupuncture for an extensive list of conditions? Does he know that the National Institute of Clinical Excellence in the UK based on research has recommended that acupuncture should be used for musculoskeletal pain?
Traditional Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach, therefore, I have not been waiting for Dr Healy’s letter to inform me about the biological, psychological and socioeconomic factors which affect the complex condition of infertility.
As an acupuncturist with many years experience as a nurse and midwife, I use only evidence-based practice. Therefore I reject his allegations and suggest he should keep up to date with research. – Yours, etc,
