A chara, - Although Ronan Delaney (July 11th) says our society should be based on tolerance, he becomes irate at the suggestion that a sculpture of Christ be erected on O'Connell Street. Are we to take his reaction as indicative of the tolerant society he aspires to?

While not personally advocating such a monument on O'Connell Street, I have no objection in principle to such a suggestion being considered. Since the dominant ethos of our island population is Christian, why can't people give public expression to that ethos, if a majority so wish? In accord with Mr Delaney's new "tolerance", will be forced to erect screens to conceal Catholic and Protestant Churches from the sight of non-Christians?

It seems to be his contention that the rights of a majority are to be circumscribed to the extent of prohibiting the public expression of their values in case a minority might dissent? Such a thesis amounts to a dictatorship of the minority. - Is mise,
