Sir - The simultaneous closure of the Semperit tyre factory, with loss of jobs, and projections of fewer farm jobs in EU Ireland, raise moral questions. People who labour in the motor industry - and buy its products - participate in an environmentally ruinous enterprise.

The private car and lorry do immense damage to the environment, quality of life and human health. On the other hand, people who work on the land in sustainable food cultivation engage in a healthy and moral enterprise.

Ireland should re examine spiritual values. Why welcome the demise of a sustainable way of living, while mourning the closure of an environmentally damaging one? The cost of job creation for EU industrialism is a moral question. Infrastructure and jobs which destroy God's creation are unacceptable to anyone who professes faith in the Creator and in the Incarnation. Yours, etc.,
