Sir, - May I suggest that a sensible expansion of the car scrappage scheme would be to extend it to bicycles and buses, both old and new, as they are surely as much a danger and nuisance to motorists on the road as old cars. Under the bicycle scrappage scheme, bicycles would be scrapped in return for tokens which would be redeemable against the purchase of any new car. Likewise, all public buses would be scrapped and the tokens shared out among the few remaining people who still have the courage and patience to rely on the public bus service.
You might consider this advice drastic and befitting a country much less enlightened than our own. Yet given our past record in these matters, I am anticipating an enthusiastic response to my suggestion and the making of provisions in the next Budget for its speedy implementation. - Yours, etc.,
