Ryanair and SIPTU

Madam, - I see that Ryanair's enthusiasm for George Orwell's works knows no bounds

Madam, - I see that Ryanair's enthusiasm for George Orwell's works knows no bounds. Having embraced the mindless mantras of Animal Farm in its advertisements it has now adopted "newspeak" from 1984. In "newspeak" events are redefined to mean whatever you want them to mean, so that a "No Fares Day" protest by CIE staff means that public transport closed down for the day and charging government taxes on passengers who fail to make their flights becomes part of "a non-refundable air fare".

Living in such a world may explain why the company's head of communications, Paul Fitzsimmons (August 15th), finds the behaviour of SIPTU members in taking industrial action at the airport, and the reporting of industrial relations by such non-newspeak "union-friendly organs" as The Irish Times and RTÉ so hard to comprehend. - Yours etc.,
