Rural postal deliveries

Madam, - I live in the last house on a mile-long country lane.

A couple of years ago we were asked by An Post if we would accept a mailbox at the mouth of the lane in order to relieve the postman of the long journey to our home. We refused to accept that but we told An Post that we were happy to collect our mail daily from the post/sorting office in the village.

This, it declared, would be acceptable but it would impose a charge for this facility.

The postman still delivers; he's a very pleasant man. - Yours, etc.,
