Sir, - Before any more of your correspondents get too exercised by the Irish rugby team, perhaps it would be useful to reflect on a few points. First, members of the team used to play for Ireland, now they play for money. Any money will do, be it from supporters, sponsors, broadcasting "rights".
The players' professionalism also manifests itself in a new code of conduct. This replaces what used to be known as sportsmanship and results in more fouls on the pitch and even fewer manners off it.
As marketable commodities, the rugby team has no claims on national loyalty. Those who value the game are free to support, or not, the team of their choice. As good Europeans, they should exercise that right among the six competing nations. - Yours, etc.,
Mike Norris, Cabinteely Green, Dublin 18.
