Sir, - May I clarify one part of Patsy McGarry's otherwise accurate and welcome report from the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (The Irish Times, June 8th)? I did not say that the name of the RUC must change. I was quoting a Catholic friend of mine as saying that the name must change if he was to have the experience of not being policed by someone else's police force.

I said that it was a regrettable fact that the retention of the RUC name was not acceptable to him and to 40 per cent of the population. Given what the RUC and their families have been through, it is also regrettable that even the suggestion of our committee that a compromise be reached in which the new name and that of the RUC both be used may not prove acceptable either. - Yours, etc.,

Rev John Dunlop, (Co-convener of Church and Government Committee) Belfast.
