Madam, - I live in Killiney, Co Dublin and over the past few days I have been able to witness the devastating result of the fine weather on Killiney beach. It has been transformed into a rubbish dump.

When going for an evening swim I was outraged to see the state of the beach. Dirty nappies, empty beer cans, plastic bottles, discarded clothing and swim gear, plastic toys, etc. Rubbish everywhere. Shocking! And even more shocking was to see many of the rubbish bins on the beach virtually empty.

Why is it that so many people have no respect for the environment we live in? I was accompanied by an Austrian friend who could not believe her eyes. "Boy, the Irish are dirty," she said.

We spent at least an hour picking up the grossest pieces of rubbish and putting them in the rubbish bins. After a while we were joined by a group of Spanish teenagers, who were equally shocked. - Yours, etc,
