Sir, – Chris Ryder’s call to commemorate the service of the Royal Irish Constabulary is timely and appropriate (Opinion Analysis, August 1st).
Joining the RIC was always regarded as an honourable calling, except during the periods of political unrest, when those who opposed government rule, recognising the community service of the constabulary, tried to undermine this service and physically attacked their fellow countrymen.
It is therefore even now appropriate to commemorate this tradition of community policing, which also laid the basis for the Catholic middle classes in Ireland.
This is clearly evidenced by the number of doctors, teachers, clergy and other professionals among the sons and daughters of those who served. – Yours, etc,
