Remembering Donal Barrington

A chara, – It was with great sadness that I read your obituary of Donal Barrington (January 6th).

Donal was the senior counsel in an action taken by myself and the late Mary Andersen to have the 1927 Juries Act declared ultra vires the Constitution on the grounds of gender and class discrimination.

My abiding memory of him is his flawless advocacy, his absolute dedication to the case – he unhesitatingly proceeded to the Supreme Court when we lost the case at High Court level – and the fact that he took the case, from start to finish, pro bono.

May the sod rest lightly on his head. – Is mise,

MAIRIN DE BURCA,
