Madam, – While taking unfounded potshots at politicians is a popular way to get readers onside, I take exception to John Rogers’s assertion (Opinion, May 18th) that Enda Kenny retreated from his proposals to reform the Oireachtas. In fact, Enda Kenny, myself and the Fine Gael Party have presented a radical political reform policy which would completely overhaul the Oireachtas.

As someone close to politics I expected Mr Rogers to recognise the value of and work put into Fine Gael’s “New Politics” policy. We want a mandate from the people at the next election to reduce the number of TDs, reduce and strengthen the Oireachtas committees, make government more transparent and accountable, create a citizens’ assembly to drive further political reform and hold a referendum on creating a single- chamber Oireachtas. Far from “retreating” we welcome constructive debate on our published proposals. – Yours, etc,

PHIL HOGAN TD,

Fine Gael Spokesperson on Environment, Heritage & Local Government,

Dáil Éireann, Dublin 2.
