Madam, - When I was at primary school in the 1960s and 1970s, we were regularly asked to save up our pennies for the poor black babies in Africa.

Thus I grew up believing that these black babies were of importance to the Irish, that we should feed them, nurture them and cherish them.

Given the Government's proposed referendum, it appears that we now feed, nurture and cherish them only as long as they stay at home in Africa.

Those few who arrive to be born on our shores are to be clearly given the message that there is no room in our inn.
