Sir, - Father Martin Clarke, spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Hierarchy, informs us that a programme of education on the forthcoming abortion referendum will be undertaken in all parishes. This is all well and good, but would it not be better, rather than limiting such meetings to Roman Catholics if in each particular area Christians of all denominations could meet in groups to discuss the matter?
Furthermore such groups should not be limited to Christians, but should be open to people of all religions or none. In such groups each would listen to the other, and, having listened, consider, and having considered, come to a personal decision.
Cardinal Connell has called for a calm, well-informed debate on this issue. Such groups might help to achieve this. Yours, etc.
