Madam, - Your excellent Editorial of October 4th on positive ageing, with its comment that the Old and New Testaments have little to say about the elderly, came as a challenge to me as an older person.
How about this from the Old Testament? "Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God" (Leviticus 19, verse 32). Or: "Listen to your father and do not despise your mother because she is old" (Proverbs 23, verse 22).
And from the New Testament: "Never use harsh words to an older man, but talk to him as a father" (1 Timothy 5, verse 1).
In the wake of Positive Ageing Week this comes as good advice to younger people! - Yours, etc
