Madam, - For several weeks Marian Finucane's two-hour radio programme on RTÉ has been actively plugging her "greatest Irishwoman" poll, won last week by Nano Nagle.

Nano Nagle may well be a deserving winner - but the poll itself attracted a miserable 22,000 voters and Nano herself got a little over 5,000, marginally ahead of Mary Robinson and Michelle Smith.

Listening to the radio programme over the weeks, one got the impression that the nation, well the female half of it, was gripped with enthusiasm for this particular space filler and that the votes were pouring in.

Surely a poll that attracts less than 1 per cent of the votes of its potential electorate (those with access to phones) should be dismissed with scorn, rather than awarding such a prestigious title which, as everyone knows, should have gone to Marian herself. - Yours, etc,
