Polish perspective on VE Day

Madam, - What has not been mentioned in recent correspondence is the fact that many Polish airmen served in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and thousands served, under General Anders, as part of the British army in North Africa.

Thousands died in the battle for Monte Casino, and the monument in the Polish cemetery there carries the following inscription:

"We gave our souls to God, our blood to the Italian soil, but our hearts remain for ever in Poland."

And yet, not one Polish Free Army serviceman was allowed to march in the VE parade in London in 1945 so as not to offend that other ally, the Soviet Union. - Yours etc,

ZIVKO JAKSIC,
