Plans for 'Metro North'

Madam, - I agree with Ciarán Daly (April 7th)

Madam, - I agree with Ciarán Daly (April 7th). Metro North's trains need to be wider or longer (whichever is cheaper) and go further south than the Green.

The Railway Procurement Authority's "half-Metro" seems to take no account of the numbers of passengers who will join and leave it at the four interconnecting stations. More importantly, sustainable, low-carbon travel in Dublin implies a six-fold rise in the use of public transport, according to the Department of Transport's recent paper. Enlarging on the current plan for Metro North will of course raise its cost, but the extra passengers will more than pay for the increased capital outlay.

Let's not have another M50 planning foul-up - this is a project for all of this century. - Yours, etc,
