Madam, - Surely the plan to ban smoking in the workplace must be extended to cars and other vehicles? The voiceless victims of passive smoking in these settings are the children who accompany adult smokers. From infancy to adolescence they are frequently confined, for prolonged periods, to smoke-filled chambers with no control of ventilation. We must not ignore the contribution of this exposure to children developing asthma, becoming smokers themselves and/or later developing cardiac and respiratory diseases.
It would be helpful if the Minister for Health and Children were to consult young people on this matter so that their views can be heard. - Yours, etc.,
TOM MORAN, Sandymount Avenue, Dublin 4.
