Pensions on the double

Madam, – In response to Paul Coughlan’s letter (April 29th): politicians who choose to redirect their pensions to their chosen charity are in fact making a “salary sacrifice”. The Revenue Commissioners are quite clear that PAYE and PRSI are due on any salary sacrifices made. So not only are our charities benefiting handsomely, the Government also maintains its tax base and rather than politicians reducing their personal tax bill, they are increasing it.
