Sir, – If the majority of taxpayers, who are employed by SMEs, need proof that the European Commission is not working in their interests, they need look no further than the EU directive, to be voted into law here in March, which states that the statutory payment period for businesses is to be increased to 60 days (Business, January 16th).

Do the members of the EU who organised this shocking change know about the financial crisis and do they understand that an economy comes from the bouncing ball of money? They should be reducing the statutory payment period instead of increasing it.

Has the EU lost its moral compass? If it has, we need to supply it with a replacement at the next election. – Yours, etc,
