Sir, - The reaction (or lack of it) to the proposed Orange march in Dublin has further convinced me of the widening gulf between North and South.

I lived in Belfast for a number of years and as a nationalist I felt anxious and intimidated when one day I got caught up in an Orange march.

From Dublin, the marches may look like a grand expression of cultural heritage, but for many they appear as bellicose expressions of anti-nationalism. How must the residents of the Garvaghy Road feel when, after three difficult years of protest, they see Dublin welcome what has caused them such grief? Has the Lord Mayor no sense of solidarity?

I wonder are those who welcome the marchers fully aware of the situation in Northern Ireland or of the Orange Order and what it stands for. - Yours, etc.,
