Sir, - The term "successful" is often attached to those with demonstrated ability to accumulate wealth and to outwit and outstay the rest of us. That's fine, but thankfully there arises from time to time a person whose core values are a more worthy signal to society. Noel Carroll was one of these.
An Irishman's Diary of October 29th captured the essential goodness of the man. To the sense of honour and commitment extolled by Kevin Myers may be added Noel's total lack of resentment. Life for him was too joyful and precious an experience to be wasted in harbouring grudges. Whingers were given short shrift.
To those of us fortunate enough to have been friends of Noel, the Diary has furnished a cutting to be filed away under generosity of spirit and love of life. Filed away, but not to be forgotten. - Yours, etc.,
