National spring clean

Sir, – Having heard on the radio the advertisement for the “national spring-clean kit”, I must tell you about an anonymous man who has on his own for the past two months been picking up rubbish – mainly tin cans and coffee cups – a two-mile stretch on the Marsh road outside Skibbereen and placing it in bags.

What galls me – and probably him as well – is that a fortnight after he had made his first collection, he collected as much rubbish again, and likewise a fortnight later.

Why there are no adverts on radio or television encouraging drivers and passengers not to throw their tin cans out the window is beyond me.

Surely prevention is better than cure? It would surely encourage the anonymous collector to continue his good work. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL LEAHY,

Bawnishal,

Skibbereen, Co Cork.
