Madam, - With this year's commemorations of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, I'd like to commend Padraig O'Morain's timely article "Days of slavery are not over" (Health Supplement, March 27th).
Mr O'Morain asks if we will continue to ignore the modern-day slavery of hundreds of women in Ireland, trafficked into bondage to satisfy a market demand created by a percentage of men in Irish society.
Let our unequivocal response be that we will no longer tolerate the sale and purchase of women's bodies in this degrading way. Let our answer be the enactment of effective legislation to combat this crime. - Yours, etc,
NIAMH NIC CARTHAIGH, Main Street, Schull, Co Cork.
